What is the difference between speech, language and communication?
- Speech means being able to say speech sounds, talk with a clear voice and speak without hesitating or repeating too much, to make yourself understood.
- Language is understanding what others say as well as using the right words and sentences to say what you mean.
- Communication is using and interpreting language and non-verbal communication such as gestures and facial expressions as well as listening to others and taking turns.

What is SLCN?
SLCN stands for speech, language and communication need – a term used to describe difficulties in one or more areas of communication such as:
- attention and listening
- understanding language
- using language
- play and interaction
- social skills
- speech

Where can I find out more about Speech and Language Therapy?

Is ComIT the same as Speech & Language Therapy?
No - ComIT works in partnership with ABUHB Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service and will sometimes support you or your child’s therapy targets in school/college, on request from a speech & language therapist.
