Listen Up is a fabulous group for children to see and get to know other deaf children. My child is in a mainstream school so doesn’t get to be with other deaf children so it’s brilliant for her to be with others who understand her. Without the group my child wouldn’t see or talk to other Cochlear Implant users. She doesn’t have to worry about having to explain how she missed something or to ask again. It’s really helped her confidence and she loves that Teachers of d/Deaf children ask her about what activities would be good and that she can help younger members of the group
Listen up has nice people there and everyone is kind. There are lots of activities and I really enjoyed making friendship bracelets and the cooking. There are groups of different ages and I like helping the younger children
It’s been lovely to see my child’s confidence grow each time we went. For her to be around other children with hearing aids etc and a place for me to meet other parents to talk about it. You don’t see many opportunities for this so it’s an amazing space for both myself and of course my child.
Child (aged 7) has loved attending Listen Up and looks forward to each session – especially the cooking activities. SenCom staff have arranged some fabulous outside visitors which really boosts his confidence. The group also helps us so much to be around other children and families experiencing the same challenges. Thank you team for supporting us and welcoming us all into such a caring community
My son has a unilateral deafness in his left ear. We have only been coming along to Listen Up for a short time, and he is naturally a shy child. It can take a lot for him to feel comfortable enough to let people in and come out of his shell. Since attending Listen Up we have seen such a positive change in his confidence. He is now joining in with activities without needing me by his side. He is much more willing to try new activities that are brought along to the group and has even started trying things outside of the group that he may not have considered before
I’m so grateful for the d/Deaf playgroup and everyone in it. When we found out our child was deaf it felt like we were completely alone but this group has made us think completely different and we are given so much support
Coming to the d/Deaf playgroup for the short amount of time we were able to actually influenced my child’s worldview massively that hearing aids are normal! She found it so sweet seeing tiny babies wearing them, and was also fascinated by people really using BSL to communicate. Even now aged 3.5 she doesn’t realise why some people don’t have hearing aids, she thinks they’re cool and why wouldn’t everyone want some! We’ve also made friends for life and for that we will be especially grateful!
This d/Deaf playgroup has been our saviour, we were devastated when we found out our child was deaf, but with the support of you all now we know everything will be okay. We’ve made friends for life, which we are truly grateful for.
